Summary of recent events:
We held a meeting at Bridgend Deaf club on Monday 2nd June which 8 people attended. At this meeting we agreed dates for future meetings and our plans as a region for the next 12 months. We have decided to produce a leaflet outlining the role and how to book an interpreter and a list of those interpreters who are registered in the S Wales area. A lot of our discussion centred on how to promote this leaflet amongst the local Deaf community and organisations. We also spent part of the meeting talking through issues that some freelance interpreters are experiencing at the moment.

18 people attended the Margo Currie workshop on Professionalism and Coping Strategies in April and it was great to have a number of people from outside our region with us for this event.

There were 13 people present at our 3rd March meeting. The main topic of discussion was the forthcoming AGM and the proposed motions.

Summary of recent significant contacts:
A member of our region represented ASLI at an information day organised by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council in April. This was well attended by the Deaf community and council members and it was a good opportunity to showcase ASLI.

Meetings planned in the next 3 months:
Our next meeting will be held on 28th July and we hope to invite Jeff Bratton-Wilson to talk to us about his new role as an advocacy officer for a local council

We are also planning to ask Jo Martin from the RNID to come to our September 1st meeting to discuss any issues with freelance interpreters and the local CSU.

Dates for the ASLI Calendar:
Our next two regional meetings will be on July 28th and September 1st at 6.30pm in Bridgend Deaf Club.

September 2007

As a region, a lot of our time and energy has been given to the BSL Futures Apprentice Interpreter project.  We are currently writing an article on this project to go in a future edition of NEWSLI.  The BSL Futures project has funded the training for 15 approved ASLI mentors in Wales.  At present we have five approved mentors and we hope to achieve our target of 15 by the end of the project in May 2008.

At our meeting in June we discussed the format of our future meetings, our E-group (SWSLI) the recent NEC meeting and matters arising from it.

In our September meeting we discussed the achievements of our region in the previous year and our aims for the next 12 months, the online questionnaire for members’ views and opinions, the AGM in April and possible speakers for our Saturday meetings.

Meetings for the next 12 months are as follows

November 17th 10-4pm ASLI business and speaker

January 7th       7-9pm ASLI business

March 22nd     10-4pm ASLI business and speaker

May 19th     7-9pm ASLI business

July 19th   10-4pm ASLI business and speaker

All meetings shall take place in Bridgend Deaf Club and we will announce our speakers and training workshops once they have been confirmed and these events will be open to other regions who would like to attend.

May 07

Recent regional meetings for the S Wales group have focused on the AGM, appointment of Chair and Reps, the BSL Futures project and training needs.

Last September the format of our regional meetings was changed to accommodate the ever increasing number of Affiliates who are joining our group. Previously ASLI business was discussed with members only and then Affiliates would join the group to network and attend any training. Now the meetings are open and the majority of those attending are BSL Futures Apprentice interpreters.

Attendance at our meetings by Full or Associate members has been poor. At our most recent meeting on April 24th 8 people attended of which only 2 were members. It was decided that future meetings need more structure and that the group needs to rethink the aims of the regional meetings to encourage members to return and be involved with ASLI at a regional level.

Our meeting on March 13th was an informal one held in Cardiff after a “BSL Futures Event” hosted by the Welsh Assembly. The main topics for discussion were the ASLI AGM and the lack of nominations for Chair and Reps. In attendance were 5 members and 17 Affiliates.

The previous meeting on January 31st was attended by 3 members and 11 Affiliates. Chief Inspector Tony Wilcox came to discuss Gwent Police Force’s procedure in booking interpreters and the possibility of arranging a training session to coincide with a visit to a local police station. Mentoring provision by those mentors currently undergoing training and collecting evidence for their portfolios was discussed. BSL Futures currently has 16 people providing mentoring to Apprentices and the majority of those offering mentoring are ASLI members.
