Summary of recent Events including attendance:
Having been a member of the Manchester group since joining ASLI I took the opportunity to attend the regional meeting in Liverpool in March 08. 10 attendee’s were present and during the meeting we had a presentation from one member who is reaching the end of his Mentor training. This presentation highlighted the highs and lows of the training course and how he sees it moving on. We also had a presentation from a deaf member who recently qualified as a Home Office appointed Intermediary.

The following week the Manchester regional meeting took place with 9 members in attendance. Points of discussion including training requirements, ID badges and the coming conference.

Summary of recent events
Since the last report we have had a very successful training session in the Manchester sub region with members from Preston and Liverpool sub regions in attendance. We had great attendance by both members and non-members (18 members and 7 non members and one ASLI member who had not attended a regional meeting in over 10 years!).
We wanted to hold a training session that would look at Mentoring and Supervision for Interpreters. Our Manchester Rep, Sarah Glendenning did a truly marvellous job in securing the presenters for our training event, Clare Shard, Ali Hetherington and Caroline Bickerton who all offered their expertise, knowledge and time before Christmas to facilitate this event for us, so a massive thanks to them.

The feedback to date has been really encouraging and as such we are looking at several other ideas for the future. Including one really interesting in International Sign! Keep watching the ASLI training page for further details on that one.

Meetings planned in the next three months
Manchester will be having their next meeting on Wednesday 12 March at 6.15pm. The venue will once again be City College Manchester in Northenden. Thank you to Maria Brennan for organising the room and thanks to CCM for allowing us to use the room free of charge and have use of the free car park! The majority of the meeting will be taken up discussing the new proposal that has been put forward by the NEC.

Any other information
Work is still ongoing behind the scenes and we have recently had a couple of new enquiries from people who would like to attend the ASLI meetings.

November 2007

It’s been a quiet few months since the NEC Away Weekend, Liverpool have had a regional meeting, Preston have not had one, and Manchester have theirs next week. However, that regional meeting on Nov 28th Manchester is now to be a training event and have secured Caroline Bickerton, Ali Hetherington and Clare Shard to come and discuss mentoring and supervision. The Northwest region has decided to open this to non-members so that they can see what being a member of ASLI can do for them! Of course food and drinks are being used to entice them all to come!

Having recently taken over the role of Chair for this region I am still getting a ‘feel’ for what members require so I hope the next quarter will be one of more activity to report on.
