This incoming year is looking very positive for our region.
Membership
Two more Supporters have signed up and we have potentially 10-12 new members who are currently on a course that will bring them to JTI status in December. I have been invited to present ASLI to them in the incoming weeks.
Mentoring
Our five full members have just completed the third mentoring weekend along with three other MRSLIs. The new interpreters (mentioned above) are obliged to have a mentor as they go through this course and into the new programme (see below) so they also received mentee training. There is an increased and structured demand for mentoring now so good luck to all our potential mentors as they complete the programme.
ASLI NI would like to thank John Walker, Marco Nardi and Zane Hema for their involvement in this training and RNID for their support in organising this.
Funding
Our local Government have recently announced a budget of £1.3m for interpreter training in Northern Ireland. ASLI representatives are involved in this venture so further information will follow as this develops and progresses.
Training
As well as the mentoring training, we held a ‘Training Needs Assessment Day’. Ten interpreters were present and we discussed personal and group training requirements which were identified through dilemma discussions. It was a really successful and worthwhile event and has resulted in a training plan that covers training in mentoring sessions, ASLI NI in-house training sessions and training that requires external training input. This will be agreed with Caron Hawkings so further details will be on the calendar in the near future.

3. Summary of Recent events including attendance:
On 14 November 2007 we had a planning meeting for 2007/2008. We discussed budget
issues, training opportunities (both internal and external) and agreed frequency of
meetings.
We agreed that we would hold a social, then have a discussional meeting leading on
from issues raised at the social before agreeing the topic if the training event thereafter.
This meeting cycle will run twice through the year and will be determined by what the
current issues are with the group at that time.
Attendance: 5 members
On 12 January 2008, we had our ‘Christmas dinner’ night and enjoyed the opportunity to
socialise together. Six interpreters attended the dinner and we had great discussions
that lead on to the next meeting.
On 12 February, we had our discussional meeting and it has been agreed that our
training residential will look at the Interpreters’ Roles Boundaries and Duty of Care. The
venue, trainer and cost have still to be confirmed.
Attendance: 6 members
4. Summary of recent significant contacts, networking, meetings:
The ASLI Mentoring programme began here in November and the second weekend was
completed in January. This has been funded through RNID.
RNID also provided our Full members the opportunity to access PSNI (Police Service
NI) and NI Courts group training.
It is hoped that this partnership between RNID and ASLI NI will continue especially
regarding training opportunities.
Hands That Talk, an organisation who hold the health contract for the Northern Trust,
have asked for ASLI to introduce themselves formally at a meeting on 23 February. This
is an important meeting as there is potential for ASLI NI to gain more members from this
region which is greatly under resourced in terms of interpreting and communication
support.
5. Meetings planned in the next three months
The next meeting will be held in Londonderry on 18 April 2008.
Further details of this will be confirmed in the near future.
