The Midlands region is the second largest region in terms of membership, currently having 94 members. The region is geographically widespread and historically meetings have been held in both the East and West Midlands to try to be as accessible as possible to all members.
Meetings in the West Midlands are held monthly and alternate between Wolverhampton and Birmingham. Meetings in the East Midlands have been informal bi monthly affairs. We have recently launched our very own aslimidlands facebook page (by invitation only). This includes details of future meeting dates, various photographs of regional social activities and information pertaining to the region in both BSL and English. We also have an active and interesting e-group which we are currently developing to include an online resource library and links section.
Meetings are fun and participatory with a large percentage of attendees undertaking projects on behalf of the region. For example, one of our members has recently agreed to set up a Midlands newsletter which will highlight the achievements of our members as well as sharing personal news i.e. births, marriages etc.
Another member has volunteered to co-ordinate regional training and we look forward to having guest speakers at future meetings as well as training events specifically requested by our members.
We always welcome new members and visitors from other regions and look forward to seeing some of you soon.

Summary of recent events:
Alban Welch recently stepped down after 2 years as Chair. We thank Alban so much for all his work for the Midlands region and wish him the very best – we know that he’ll continue to be an active and valuable member. We are delighted to report that Thaisa Whistance has offered to take on the role. She has precisely the qualities needed to make an excellent Chair and has many plans to engage the membership and build relationships with our local student cohort and service users. Thaisa is unable to take up the role until June, so Maria Kilbride is caretaking in the interim.

The West Mids members will continue to hold monthly meetings alternately between Birmingham and Wolverhampton, and hope to address recent flagging numbers by organising an excellent events calendar to include training, guest speakers and social events, on which we hope our East Mids colleagues will join us. Danny Stubbs has kindly agreed to co-ordinate training events for the region.
