Summary of recent Events

Summary of recent significant contacts
LSE Survey Monkey:
The region has conducted a survey monkey consultation to assist with developing a new 2008/09 regional programme. A good turn out of response was received (70members). Questions were on types of speakers, preferred months for hosting events, language preference for running events, and suggestions for speaker topics.
Quality Assurance:
The Quality Assurance project has been a little quiet as of late. However, we are still an active team working towards improving standards in ASLI. Ian has been in touch with the National Secretary and awaits instructions on the next documents that will be processed through the next phase.
GLDA:
The AGM took place on 10th May but unfortunately there was insufficient people in attendance to make full quorum. Tomato Lichy has stepped down as the Steering Committee Chair and Andrew Jordan has now taken on this role. There has also been other changes on the committee, thus giving it new enthusiasm and inputus and the last 2 weeks have seen a plethora of emails planning things for London.
Current developments are the creation of GLDA website. The next meeting will be Wednesday 28th May, after attendance at this meeting it is hoped to have a list of members to share with the region and what their roles are. Also, future GLDA dates will be added to the ASLI Calendar when they are confirmed.
Meetings planned in the next 3 months:
The LSE committee meet regularly (roughly every 4weeks) to discuss regular standing matters; Regional budget, Action plans for Regional events, reviewing achievements & goals. Robert Skinner (Chair) is absent till August.

have agreed to work with Ian Hodgetts in carrying our the QA project. The 'QA Team'
are Jennifer Smith, Frances Coates and Adele Ash. Many thanks to them for their
contribution and valued input into this project. The team have had an initial meeting to
go through the QA system and expectations and the team will now start to process
requested item(s) in active liaison with the National Secretary.
Greater London Deaf Association (GLDA) (Ian Hodgetts): The GLDA is still in the initial
development stages but progress is being made with the exact format and structure that
this group will take. ASLI continues to be represented at the meetings by Ian Hodgetts
and, once all is finalised, then some proactive work shall begin. The group has agreed
to 'proof-read' ASLI documents, along with other members of the Deaf community to
ensure that they are accessible. We will also work together on local issues for the
London Deaf community to bring closer formal liaison.
Professional Development Programme (Ian Hodgetts): Ian Hodgetts has recently been
appointed the PDP liaison officer. Some initial consultations have gone out to the region
with regard to preference for the timing of training days. This will be fed back to the
PDP Chair and group. Next phase will be asserting from the region what courses they
would like and any preference for dates. There was a suggestion at last regional
meeting to have a 'pilot' of the "Voice Over" 2 day training course (facilitated by David
Wolfenden and Dave Phippard) to take place in London following the very successful
session on 8th February.

The regional programme has shifted from being evening events to full day events. This is a 1 year trial programme to assess if we get a higher number of attendance and value for money from our budget. The intention is to run events around the South-East corner of the UK.
Two of these events can be held on a Saturday and one can be on a working week where staff interpreters can request to their employers that they attend a training event.
Regional Meetings
The London & South-East region have run the following sessions since the last NEC meeting in May:
- June 12th Voice coaching with Alex Bulmer
- June 31st Social with student/trainees/newly qualified interpreters. This was a networking evening to discuss various interpreting matters and raising awareness of the mentoring programme. More social events of this kind will follow.
