What we do:
Provide support and information about the interpreting profession to registered interpreters (and especially to ASLI members ), those who are interested in the interpreting profession and those who wish to book interpreters, including our local Deaf Communities.
Current/Future Tasks:
LOOKING BACK:
The Devon and Cornwall ASLI Regional Group has grown from a small number to 16 members in the last five years. Under our previous Chair and Reps, work concentrated on giving basic information about interpreting to our local Deaf Communities and to those who book interpreters, as well as to unregistered signers who work as interpreters. Strong links have been formed with the Devon Deaf Project, Devon County Council and other district councils, key local services such as Devon and Cornwall Police, the Fire and Rescue Service and ERADE (Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education) as well as with the major Deaf Clubs in Devon/Cornwall. With the advent of a newly established interpreter-run agency, this basic work has largely ceased in Devon as they undertake this role there. However, ASLI continues to provide impartial advice wherever necessary about the booking and use of interpreters and in particular, it is felt by the group that Cornwall still needs its own presentation at the main Deaf Club.
LOOKING FORWARD: TASK ONE
To contact the D & C Peninsula Medical School to raise awareness of interpreters with trainee doctors – a rep will make initial contact to arrange a visit to the Medical School, ideally with a Deaf Colleague from the Devon Deaf Project to deliver a session which will focus on interpreting rather than Deaf Awareness.
TIME REQ: half day on organising and planning / two hours for meeting with Deaf Project Co-ordinator / Three hours for the ‘awareness’ session to be delivered at Medical School. Chair and Rep.
Deadline: December 2008
TASK TWO
To continue to represent ASLI at various Devon County Council Equality/Diversity events i.e. Devon BSL Charter meetings. NOTE: DCC pays for ASLI representation.
TIME REQ – 4 three hour meetings per year. (If a 4th Sign Vision Conference is planned for 09, this time commitment could increase dramatically and the region will be consulted as to whether they feel this is a priority. Shared between Chair and Reps.)
Deadline: on-going
TASK THREE
To arrange training/skills session at Trehorne Golf Club, Launceston, Cornwall on Monday July 21st 2008, 6pm to 9pm on topic of ‘Court/Legal Interpreting issues’.. This session will be facilitated and led by members of the regional group.
To arrange training/skills session at ERADE, Topsham Road, Exeter on Tuesday September 30th 2008, 1.30pm to 4.30pm on the topic of ‘Office/Telephone Interpreting issues’
To arrange a full-day training session before the end of the ASLI year in 2009 on Co-working. Need advice from the NEC about this session.
TIME REQ- an hour a week plus, by Rep/Chair to organise dates and facilitate the training plus the actual days training.
Deadline: on-going
TASK FOUR
To keep region in touch via email about general information and specifics e.g. arrange dates for post Christmas Social event in early January 09.
TIME REQ. Emails – one to two hour per week by Chair.
Deadline: on-going
TASK FIVE
To arrange an ASLI presentation in Cornwall at the main Deaf Club – for Deaf people and people learning sign language.
TIME REQ. Half day organising by Rep plus two hours for the ASLI Chair to plan the session and brief people on what is required from them. Evening to give presentation.
Deadline: by March 2009
TASK SIX
To do basic admin for group – run email group, pass out relevant information between NEC and regional group, or any other relevant information. To respond to external emails, NEC emails and regional group emails. To write quarterly and annual reports. To do work plan. To budget for expenditure and plan accordingly. Chair (with support from Reps.)
TIME REQ: 2/3 hours a week.
Deadline: on-going
TASK SEVEN
To attend NEC meetings 3 to 4 times per year. Chair and Rep to share this tasks.

The Devon and Cornwall ASLI regional group has a record number of members, including a number of affiliates who are showing real commitment to joining our profession in the future. It has been very encouraging that the ASLI roadshows, organised by our members over the last year, have obviously helped to spread the word.
The geography of our area means that the regional email group is vital to keep us all in touch. The following events have been arranged so that members have an opportunity to meet up in person.
Diary of events:
Wednesday October 3rd 2007 –10am to 4pm at Torquay Police Station. This day will comprise of a half-day training session (networking with police colleagues, police jargon-busting session, etc) and a half-day ASLI meeting.
Friday/Saturday January 25/16th 2008 - (to be confirmed). This will be a two-day session on ‘Linguistic Synergy’ with national trainer Margo Currie. Venue will be Exeter. This training will be funded largely though our regional budget because members feel that the on-going development of our skills is vital. Whilst members take every opportunity to co-work and support each other, the distances in our area do mean that interpreters can be isolated so sessions such as this are invaluable in making us feel part of a profession.
March 2008– social evening / meeting – date and venue to be confirmed but will be chosen to ensure as many members as possible can attend.
Members in the west of our region are considering organising another ASLI roadshow in 2008 to continue letting students of BSL, Deaf tutors and other interested people know more about ASLI.

May 2007
Members are using email to keep in touch due to the geography of our area! The first meeting of the year, April 23rd, had to be cancelled due to workloads and distances.
Our next meeting, due on June 25th 2007, will offer a place for members to discuss the sort of contact and support they want from ASLI.
The forthcoming ASLI road show (on May 17th 2007 at the Exeter school for Deaf youngsters - where BSL is also taught – is being organized currently. The aim of the evening is to target those people on Level One and Two courses so they have the right information about interpreter training and status BEFORE they start doing any ‘interpreting’.
March 07
We are delighted to welcome new affiliate members to our group and we continue to network by email regularly across our region. In addition, we hold meetings 3 to 4 times per year and have adopted a system of doing business in the morning and offering training in the afternoon. In the past year we have covered health and CPD in these training sessions.
The dates for the forthcoming year are as follows:
April 23rd 2007 – meeting and further CPD training
June 25th 2007 – meeting and MLS training
Oct 3rd 2007 – meeting and visit to local police station to see the process of custody
On May 17th 2007 we take an ASLI road show to the Exeter school for Deaf youngsters (where BSL is also taught) to give a presentation on ‘What makes a good interpreter!’ This is a follow up to a previous evening which was well attended by both our future consumers and the students of sign language who could become our future colleagues.
In addition we continue to represent ASLI at Interpreting Services Research meetings, Devon BSL Charter meetings, as well as advise key local services on writing interpreter policies and so on.
Finally, in 2006, we worked closely with Exeter Deaf Project (Living Options Devon) and Equata (a local Disabled and Deaf artists organization) to run three forums across Devon so that local theatres could consult with a potential Deaf audience on access issues.
Please email one of the regional reps Clare Seal if you wish to attend any event on: clareseal@hotmail.com
