Events/Meetings planned in the next three months.

The CEA region has had no events or meetings since the last report.
We had provisionally pencilled in a linguistics training session with Frances Elton coupled with a regional meeting for February. Unfortunately due to time restrictions in getting things set up we did not achieve that. However the PD Chair and I will be meeting with Frances on 31st March to discuss what training she can provide for us. Hopefully from that meeting we will have a firm date for our training event/meeting.

Any other information

I regret to inform you that Lyn Chase has decided to step down as an ASLI rep for our region. The position remains vacant at the time of writing.

CEA Quarterly Report September 07

Having assumed the position of Chair in May this year it has taken me a little while to get a handle on what my role, remit and responsibilities are but with support from my fellow CEA members I feel I am now getting up to speed.

We have been a largely inactive region recently and it’s important that we breathe new life into the old dog and take advantage of what ASLI has to offer us and utilise the funds available to us in a productive manner.  This has been echoed in sentiment by the committed, motivated nucleus of CEA members.

With this in mind we have hosted our first regional training in a while on 14th September - an all day workshop on Mental Health Interpreting presented by Julie Watkins.  A thoroughly informative, successful and well attended event. We hope to be able to build on this initial success with more training events in 2007/2008.

During the break times impromptu discussions ensued about what other training events members would like.  As a result of these discussions I now have a number of avenues to pursue for further training events.  Discussions were also had about how to re-establish regional meetings – a particular bug-bear of many a CEA chair of how to accommodate such a large geographical area.  Some initials thoughts have been bandied about and we now need to discuss these further in order to accurately gauge the region’s views.

The most important aim that we as a region have is re-establishing CEA in terms of:

  1. Training events – training requested included deafblind interpreting, personal safety, intermediary training
  2. Regional meetings
  3. Establishing or re-establishing links with other regions – LSE region has offered to potentially co-host an event with us at some point - something we would be keen to do.
  4. Networking within the CEA region

I am looking forward to reporting back in the next quarterly report that we have succeeded in some if not all our aims in putting us back on the map!!

Carol Foster

CEA Chair.

The group meets quarterly in different parts of the region. Information about meetings can be obtained from the reps listed above or from the Regional Reps. The meetings provide training and an opportunity for networking. The region is discussing ways of holding local meetings more regularly.
