Biography:

I went to UCLAN to study the BA Hons in Deaf Studies when I was half way through my Stage 2 in 1997.  I graduated from there in 2000 having thoroughly enjoyed the experience. During my time at University I did a lot of voluntary work with various regional and national organisations as well as two work placements.  At the end of my degree I started working as a Community Interpreter covering Cheshire & Warrington.

I worked in that area full-time for 5 years and during that time achieved my NVQ Level 4 Language unit in 2002.  I qualified as an MRSLI having achieved my Post Graduate Diploma in Interpreting in BSL/English in May 2004, again through UCLAN. I then moved over to North Wales and have now worked for a North Wales based agency for nearly 3 years. I am now working part-time employed and part-time as a freelance interpreter.

Expertise:

I have extensive experience within community settings, health appointments, work place meetings, mental health, social services reviews and police work. My personal favourite domain is working with young Deaf people interpreting forums, activity weeks / residentials, training and awareness raising sessions.

I can provide guidance around becoming a freelance worker and offer comparisons between that and working within an agency. I work within both England and Wales and so have experience and knowledge of the different structures and bodies within Health, education and political domains.

During my route to qualifying I have had the experience of both the NVQ and the P.G. Diploma so I feel that I could offer mentoring for interpreters on either of these training courses. I was able to do the mentoring training course as part of the BSL Futures project within Wales, so I have experience of mentoring both Qualified and trainee interpreters.
