Biography
I have been interpreting for 15 years; I have been an ASLI member for almost all those years. I completed the OU course “Issues in Deafness” in 1995, attended the RNID interpreter development program and registered as MRSLI in 1998 via the old exam route! Prior to interpreting I worked with deaf people with the Breakthrough Trust and Hi Kent, providing information on a range of issues and in particular technology. I also did a lot of voluntary work with FYD & NDCS, events such as family weekends and sports festivals.
I currently work full time for the RNID covering Berkshire, Aylesbury, sometimes London and occasionally Bath. Most of my work is in the community. As well as undertaking interpreting assignments I manage six RNID staff interpreters, some of whom are qualified and others working towards qualification. Prior to working with the RNID I worked for a Local Authority, within a Social Work team, interpreting mainly in Health and Social Services. In February 2008 I qualified as an A1 NVQ assessor, focussing on NVQ interpreting. Before I became an assessor I knew nothing about NVQ’s, the process etc. so it was a huge learning curve, not just in terms of getting to grips the NVQ system, the standards and criteria etc (not to mention the paper work) but also reviewing other people’s practice helped me to review my own! I achieved ASLI trained Mentor status in June 2008. As with the assessing, undertaking the mentor training has been a good learning experience and with these new strings to my bow I hope now to be able to share/give something back to future mentees.
Expertise
Feedback from my mentoring submission says that I have a supervisory/pragmatic approach and that’s me! If you want someone with an academic or theoretical approach then that’s not me, I’m a practical person and a reflector, I offer life experience! I am happy to offer support and encouragement in general interpreting issues and dilemmas within community work e.g. Health, Social Services, work meetings etc and some areas of mental health.
