Biography:

My interpreter training was through BA (Hons) Interpreting BSL/English at the University of Wolverhampton.  After graduating I spent a year in a secondary school supporting a number of Deaf pupils within its PHU.   Following this, I worked freelance part-time, interpreting in the community within a variety of settings. I achieved the NVQ4 in Interpreting BSL/English towards the end of 2004.

I am a MRSLI (IRP) and a Full Member of ASLI.  Since the autumn of 2002 I have interpreted full-time within Higher Education.

Expertise:

Working within Higher education, I have gained experience of interpreting in a variety of subject areas.  On a daily basis I contend with the challenge of interpreting within a university environment, subject specific terminology and abstract concepts.  I enjoy engaging Deaf students, colleagues and academics in discussions around these issues, and consequently, I am able to offer guidance and support to interpreters working in this setting.

During my time at the university I have been regularly involved in mentoring and supervising interpreting students on work placement within my department.  I feel there are mutual benefits in this process.  There is a sharing of knowledge and experience and I get to play a small part in supporting and encouraging the professional development of students and peers.

In addition, I still undertake interpreting assignments within the community, particularly during the semester breaks.
