Biography
I’ve been working as an interpreter since 2001. I graduated from Wolverhampton University with my BA (hons) Interpreting BSL / English in 2001 and started working for Nottingham Sign Language Interpreting service. I worked there for 18 months as a community interpreter. This gave me a wide experience of assignments, as no two days were the same! I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, especially being part of a team with all the support that provided. I then moved down to the southwest where I started working freelance. In 2003 I completed my NVQ level 4 BSL and in 2004 I completed my NVQ level 4 interpreting units.
In addition to working full time as an interpreter I am actively involved in ASLI. I am currently the Devon and Cornwall regional chair and the national publicity and promotions officer.
Expertise:
My experience has predominately been in the community so I feel the skills I have to offer are in the dynamics of interpreting, inter / intra personal skills, ethical dilemmas, contracts, team working etc.
In addition to this I have personal experience of both the academic and NVQ route to being Licensed. Therefore I feel I can support people through either of these processes or people that have completed their training but wish to have time to be more reflective about their work.
