ASLI Membership for International applicants
An Overseas Qualifications Ratification Committee (RC) procedure was established in February 2005 to accept an individual’s application to become an interpreter member of ASLI. The ratification committee will not come to decisions about all overseas qualifications - only the ones from actual persons in the UK who apply to become an interpreter member ASLI.
The BSL minimum qualification should be achieved (at the time of writing this is NVQ 4) but the question the RC will investigate is about the status of the Overseas Interpreting Qualification.
Procedures for applicants with overseas qualifications:
Stage 1: An application to an ASLI Regional Chair is passed on to the Ratification Committee (RC).
Stage 2: The RC contact the person and ask for copy of their Overseas Qualification.
Stage 3: The RC investigate the Overseas Interpreting Qualification (OIQ)
English Competence:
As part of this investigation the English language abilities of overseas interpreters will be taken into consideration – especially when English is not one of the languages of the overseas qualification.
Where the spoken language of the qualification is not English applicants will be required to provide evidence of an English qualification equivalent to ‘A’ Level standard or the necessary IELTS score (6) required for university entry.
Stage 4: The RC come to a decision based on their investigations and previous knowledge of overseas qualifications.
Stage 5: Decisions of the RC are passed as recommendations to ASLI exec for final ratification or otherwise.
