Policy for ASLI Membership
2008 - 2009
The policy below details the terms and conditions for ASLI Membership on behalf of the National Executive Committee of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters for England Wales and Northern Ireland (ASLI)
1 Eligibility
There shall be three categories of ASLI Membership. Members shall be required to join at and upgrade to the highest membership category for which they are or become eligible. ASLI Continuing Professional Development (CPD) can be completed voluntarily by Full Members. Applications will be considered from those whose courses/qualifications do not appear on these lists if they no longer exist.
1.1 Who may join ASLI as a Full Member (MASLI)?
Any Individual who holds one of the following qualifications, which meet the National Interpreting Standards for BSL/English Interpreters:
UCLAN/SLI Post Graduate Diploma in BSL/English Interpreting
University of Leeds MA in Interpreting Studies: BSL-English
University of Leeds Post Graduate Diploma in Interpreting Studies: BSL-English
Level 4 NVQ in Interpreting (BSL/English) & Level 4 NVQ in BSL
CACDP/MRSLI registered
Other, subject to approval by the Directors
1.2 Who may join as an Associate Member?
Any previous Associate Member and any individual who has successfully completed one of the following interpreter training courses. It is essential, for all of these applicants to have passed the BSL and interpreting modules / units to the required levels:
University of Wolverhampton BA Hons in Interpreting BSL/English
University of Bristol BSc Deaf Studies (Interpreting).
UCLAN BA (Hons) in Deaf Studies (must include all Graduate Diploma modules).
UCLAN/SLI Graduate Diploma in BSL & Communication Studies.
Heriot-Watt University Certificate in Interpreting Studies & Skills.
Middlesex University/City Lit BA (Hons) Deaf Studies Communication Support and Education (Interpreting Option).
University of Durham Postgraduate Diploma in Interpreting with the Deaf Community.
Any individual who is currently registered with the Independent Registration Panel (IRP) as a Trainee Interpreter (TI) or Junior Trainee Interpreter (JTI).
(Associate Members are encouraged to become Full Members within 3 years)
1.3 Who may join as a Student Member?
Any individual undertaking one of the following interpreter training courses:
University of Wolverhampton BA (Hons) in Interpreting BSL/English
University of Bristol BSc Deaf Studies (Interpreting)
UCLAN BA (Hons) in Deaf Studies (must include all Graduate Diploma modules)
UCLAN/SLI Graduate Diploma in BSL & Communication Studies
Heriot-Watt University Certificate in Interpreting Studies & Skills
Middlesex University/City Lit BA (Hons) Deaf Studies Communication Support and Education (Interpreting Option)
University of Leeds MA in Interpreting Studies: BSL-English
UCLAN/SLI Post Graduate Diploma in BSL/English Interpreting
University of Leeds Post Graduate Diploma in Interpreting Studies: BSL-English
University of Durham Postgraduate Diploma in Interpreting with the Deaf Community.
1.4 All Members are expected to adhere to the Association's Equal Opportunities Policy.
2 Benefits of Membership
2.1 Benefits of Full and Associate Membership
ASLI will make every effort to provide the following benefits of Membership to Full and Associate members, however provision of all benefits are subject to change and cannot be guaranteed. Some of the following benefits of ASLI Membership are dependent on the Member providing a functioning email address to ASLI.

2.1.15 Access to ASLI’s Professional Development Programme
2.1.16 Access to regional egroup for Members based in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
2.1.17 Access to Scottish Interpreters Network for Members based in Scotland.
2.2 Benefits of Student Membership
ASLI will make every effort to provide the following benefits of Membership to Student members, however provision of all benefits are subject to change and cannot be guaranteed. Some of the following benefits of ASLI Membership are dependent on the Member providing a functioning email address to ASLI.
2.2.1 Quarterly magazine
2.2.2 Reduced entry fees to ASLI events
2.2.3 Access to ASLI regional meetings for Members based in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
2.2.4 Access to regional email group for Members based in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
2.2.5 For Members based in Scotland, access to the Scottish Interpreters Network
2.2.6 Access to ASLI’s Professional Development Programme
2.2.7 Access to the national Members’ e-group
3. Cost of Membership
Fees will be calculated on a pro rata basis for Full and Associate Members joining part way through their first Membership Year (1st June to 31st May). Payments can be made by Cheque or Debit/Credit card, subject to 3% surcharge.
3.1 The cost per year for Full Membership is £204
3.2 The cost per year for Associate Membership is £180
3.3 The cost per year for Student Membership is £48
Full and Associate Members may pay their membership fees by quarterly Direct Debits for subsequent years.
4. Joining ASLI as a Member
The Membership Year applies only to Full and Associate Members and runs from 1st June to 31st May. It is possible to join any category of Membership from the 1st of each month.
4.1 Application forms may be obtained from the ASLI website.
4.2 Those who are unable to access the forms from the website may request copies to be emailed or posted by contacting ASLI by email or letter.
4.3 Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
4.4 Applications must be received by the 10th of the month before membership is due to begin e.g. to begin membership on 1st March, complete application must be received by 10th February.
5 Data Protection
5.1 All details supplied by the Member may be held on a computer and used for the purposes of the Association in accordance with data protection legislation.
5.2 Member contact details will only be used for internal ASLI purposes and under no circumstances are supplied to any person or organisation outside of ASLI unless the member gives express permission to have details displayed within a directory of members.
5.3 A Member’s name and category of Membership e.g. Full, Associate or Student (also any information given by the member for inclusion in the directory of ASLI members) may be made public by the Association.
