Workshop 1

‘Introduction to Mentoring’

Anyone who has an interest in mentoring and wants to know more – open to potential mentors and mentees (Deaf or otherwise).

  • What is an effective ‘supporter’?
  • Defining Mentoring
  • Developing basic skills
  • Practice
  • Introduction of ASLI’s Mentoring Scheme
  • What happens next?
  • Understand the role of a Mentor
  • Be committed to ASLI Mentoring Scheme
  • Identify if want to become a Mentor and therefore move on to Workshops 2 & 3

Workshop 2

‘Mentoring Skills’

  • Any qualified SLI who has completed Workshop 1 or has relevant APL (see APL document for more information)
  • Any other qualified specialists (not necessarily in interpreting – see introduction) who has completed Workshop 1 or has relevant APL
  • Triads
  • Benefits for Mentor and Mentee
  • Start a session
  • During a session

  • Additional tasks
  • Start working with mentees as part of the Practicum
  • Effective auto/peer evaluation

Workshop 3

‘Advanced Mentoring Skills’

Anyone who has completed workshop 2 or has relevant APL

  • Review session
  • Mentoring and communication skills
  • Developing a learning plan
  • Practical approaches
  • Coping strategies
  • Ethical issues
  • Identifying learning objectives
  • Additional tasks
  • Once Practicum finished, to become an ASLI trained Mentor
  • Able to facilitate learning
  • Develop skills further independently
  • Practical understanding of the role of a Mentor
